USSP South Zone Championship Recap: Great Friends, Good Times & Opelika Steals the Show

I recently had the chance to play in the USSP South Zone Championship in Opelika, Alabama—a members-only pickleball tournament that brought together around 300 players. With two events on my schedule—mixed doubles and women's doubles—I was all in!

The Tournament: Pod Play, Delays & a Few Bright Spots

This year's tournament used a "pod-style" court system, where each division was assigned about four courts to play all their matches. While it helped keep things organized, it also caused some long delays, especially in the medal rounds—with teams waiting 30+ minutes to start while nearby courts sat empty.

On the upside, everyone got plenty of court time—we played a lot of games in each bracket, which made the trip feel well worth it. You definitely got your money's worth. And when it came to the podium, the medals were high-quality and beautifully designed, which added a special touch for those who made it to the top.

A personal bright spot: one of my partners had to withdraw at the last minute, and the tournament director stepped in immediately to find a replacement. That quick response kept me in the game and really showed a commitment to making sure players had a great experience.

That said, it was July in Alabama, and it was HOT. While there were some shaded areas and covered courts, the tournament could have really benefited from offering Gatorade or other electrolyte drinks at the player stations. Nutritious snacks like bananas or a few granola bars would have gone a long way to help players keep their energy up through multiple matches in the heat. It's the little things that make a big difference when you're playing hard all day.

Opelika, AL: The Real MVP

But here's where things turn around. The real highlight wasn't the bracket—it was Opelika itself.

  • Covered courts? Yes, please.

  • Access to showers at the nearby aquatic center? Total game-changer.

  • And the local eats and drinks? Absolutely worth the trip.

Resting Pulse Brewery - Opelika, AL

After a full day of dinks and drives, we visited Resting Pulse Brewing Company—a cozy spot with great beer and a fun vibe.

Mama Goldbergs - Auburn, AL

And for a nostalgic bite, we hit up Mama Goldberg's on the Auburn campus, where you can still get a pitcher of beer for just $5. Yes, really.

El Patron - Opelika, AL

Finally, my mainstay anytime I visit the Auburn/Opelika area is to have dinner and margaritas at El Patron.  The service and food is always on point!

Bottom Line

The overall experience was a good one. Playing pickleball with friends, exploring a fun town, and enjoying a few cold beers? Hard to beat.
